In the same way, recent pretender Saints Row is tackled in an early instance of the game's many, quite a few side-missions, by which drug-fuelled hallucinations refer to you gunning down aliens as well as clowns. One suspects that Rockstar provides included this to prove that it could do nonsensical slapstick if it required - but it would rather to deliver a stylised type of the real world. Or Grand Theft Auto V provides an open world more than anything else on Xbox 360 console, to the point in which it's astonishing that it's even possible on Xbox 360.
As well as money. Many it. If the disclosed cost of £170m is to be taken at face price, GTA V is the most pricey video game ever assembled. If practically nothing else, that lavishness seeps from every single pore of Los Santos, Rockstar’s twisted fax of Los Angeles along with the grand stage for our crime caper. It is a virtual arena of such enormous scale and fine detail that it continues to confound how the designers have managed to squeeze all this onto current systems hardware.

The metropolitan sprawl of the city on its own is a tangle of roads as well as definable districts; Strawberry is an area of limited social mobility, characterised by boarded-up shops, tatty slat-board residences and gangland graffiti. Around the town center is a cluster of high-reaching skyscrapers, the city’s homeless shuffling alongside office yuppies. Rockford Hills homes the city’s wealthiest, lavish mansions sitting down alongside pricey hotels, tennis courts and golf clubs (both with playable sports, they’re great too). Vespucci Beach is a hive of swim-suited pin-ups and party boats. Vinewood is the neon-splashed retreat of movie-star wannabes.
The technical accomplishment is the most noticeable. It's not the great pounce forward that GTA IV was over the original Xbox - it's even now recognisably the same technological innovation underpinning everything - nevertheless it's a marked enhancement. The draw length stretches out to the horizon, the streets - especially the freeways - are more packed with cars, and the cars themselves are more comprehensive. The lighting flawlessly captures the slightly-too-bright sunlight of LA, the ambient audio captures the sounds of the city at night. World-building has long been Rockstar's strongest match, and using this it's raised the bar once more.
And the scale of it will be remarkable. The starting missions play out in the sketchier areas of downtown, which feels like a low-rise version of the earlier game's Liberty Town, but go away north and you head via maze-like motorway interchanges, open land dotted with ranches and farms, redneck-infested desert and also machinery-filled quarries. It's all teeming with living, and filled with things to do.
The online game opens up gradually, taking quite a few hours to grant the capacity to switch between every one of the three figures, and it's nonetheless adding side-quests long there after. This is for a good reason: there's such an incredible volume of matters to attend to that even after three days of play you're overwhelmed by the possibilities on offer. The massive map is splattered with icons for starting from yoga to flight school to shooting ranges, most of which should be employed one day to buff each character's abilities.
Get new property also it extends even further: pick up a desert airstrip you can run guns into Mexico; purchase a trucking enterprise and get paid dragging away double-parked cars. Unfamiliar persons and Freaks missions proceed further, offering a small pair of side-missions for each character (for street hood Franklin it's standing upright in for a drug-addicted tow-truck driver, for deranged meth seller Trevor it's serving the delusional DIY militia hunt down "illegal immigrants").
They aren't complex, but they aren't vital either: at their most awful, they're the sort of delivery-driving busy-work that many open-world adventures use to pad the key narrative. Below, they're the distractions you pick when you want to invest a bit of time creating wealth and being attentive to the radio (the soundtrack is, as ever, exceptional, and better by the addition of a selection wheel for the stations which exhibits the used track every one is trying to play).
